Jeff Suppan has finally been released by the Milwaukee Brewers. This has been something that has been long awaited by many baseball fans due to Suppan’s poor pitching quality and strategy.
The 35-year-old right-handed pitcher got over than $10 million for being released on Monday, though, so it was a final paycheck for him. The pitcher was in the fourth year, which was the final year, of his four-year deal with the Brewers. The total contract equaled $42 million, which he first signed in 2006 as a free agent.
When Brewer’s general manager Doug Melvin announced the release, he said that he felt like Suppan could get a position on another team in the starting lineup.
Suppan had a very poor pitching quality, especially lately. In the 110 games that he has appeared in with the Brewers, he was 29-36 with an ERA of 5.08. This season he was 0-2 with an ERA of 7.84 in the 15 appearances he made, which includes two starts. During his games this season he allowed 50 hits in a total of 31 innings.
On the Brewer’s active roster, replacing pitcher Jeff Suppan, is right handed reliever Chris Smith who has previously been the closer at AAA Nashville where has had a 1.71 ERA and was 2-1. This season for the 23 relief appearances for Nashville, he also had 16 saves. He appeared in 35 games with Milwaukee last season and had no wins or losses with a 4.11 ERA. Smith will be with Milwaukee in their game against the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night.
So, what do you guys think about Suppan’s release? Did the Brewers made the right decision or should they have gave him the benefit of the doubt to see if his pitching quality could improve this year?
