Well, in the game against the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday, he definitely showed coaches and fans exactly where he belongs – on the mound out on the field. Within six innings, Ely was able to only pitch two runs to the Diamondbacks, resulting in his very first victory in the major leagues of 13-3.
Ely was first taken off the roster after last week’s start until Charlie Haegar incurred an injury that put him on the disabled list and opened up a spot for Ely. Luckily, for Ely, he isn’t going to be demoted again after this victory.
Rather than being demoted, Ely has actually earned a roster spot for starting rotation. He was able to strike out six players and give no walks. He left after the seventh inning after only allowing two runs for the other team.
After John Ely’s last start against the Milwaukee Brewers, he was supposed to head to Albuquerque Triple-A so that there would be room for Jeff Weaver to return to the starting roster from the disabled list. However, he never made it to Albuquerque because he was at Class A Inland Empire throwing a bullpen session. This all happened on Monday. Ely would only be able to return to the Dodgers if another pitcher was injured in some way, which is exactly what happened with Haegar, as stated above.
This is how became the starting pitcher for Tuesday’s game, which worked very well in Ely’s favor giving him the first major league victory and showing his team and coaches that he has what it takes to succeed in the big leagues.
Now, if the coaches take Ely off the mound anytime soon, they’ll probably regret they did. He seems to have found his place on the mound and it seems like he will be included in the pitching rotation for the remainder of the MLB season, or at least for a while.
With this victory for the Dodgers at Chase Field, it makes them 8-3 in the National League West record. It also creates a third consecutive win and a victory in five of the last six games played.
