We reported previously this week that the Milwaukee Brewers released pitcher Jeff Suppan. That was Monday. It’s now Thursday and he’s already received an offer to join another team.

The St. Louis Cardinals are taking the right-handed free agent pitcher under their wing for a minimum pro-rated contract. There were talks about two other pitchers possibly joining the Cardinals – Kevin Milwood, right-handed player from the Orioles as well as Brian Bannister, right-handed player from the Royals; however, it seems that Suppan got the final contract.

This isn’t the first time that Suppan will dress in a Cardinals uniform as he was with St. Louis from 2004 to 2006 and was quite successful going 44-26 in 95 total starts with an ERA of 3.95. This was all before he became a free agent and went on to sign with the Brewers where he was 0-2 in 15 total games, including two starts, with an ERA of 7.84 prior to being released on Monday.

The Cardinals have known for a little while that they needed to add some experience to their pitching rotation especially since their two starters Kyle Lohse and Brad Penny are out with injuries to the forearm and the back.

It is expected for Suppan to join the rotation for St. Louis as early as next week. While Suppan is great temporarily, unless he can really improve his game, that’s all he is great for. With the Brewers, in 31 innings, he allowed 29 runs. Therefore, unless he can get back to the way he played when he was with the Cardinals, he’s just a temporary relief until another solution can be found or Penny and/or Lohse return to the lineup soon. However, that’s unlikely seeing as there is no specific timetable for their return to the Cardinals lineup.
