It has been confirmed by the New York Yankees that Nick Johnson will probably undergo wrist surgery on Tuesday. It is official that he will have the surgery performed, but there has been no real official statement as to the exact date, but it is likely schedule to happen Tuesday.
Johnson was first put on the disabled list on May 8, almost 10 days ago, because of inflammation in a tendon. The Yankees initially tried to treat this inflammation with a shot of cortisone; however, it didn’t work effectively. He was also doing a series of treatments and exercises with the team’s training personnel; however, he saw no improvement.
In 2008, he played for the Washington Nationals and had to undergo wrist surgery. He will now undergo wrist surgery again this year while playing for the New York Yankees in approximately the exact same place in his wrist. Johnson does claim that the actual injury this time is different to the one he incurred in 2008, but it is in the same place of his wrist.
After the surgery, Johnson is expected to miss at least four weeks. After about four to six weeks, he will be able to begin practicing a little bit, but will have to gradually work into it. He’ll need this entire time to recover, and possibly more time, before he can rejoin the Yankees.
This is definitely not a get well overnight injury and it’s going to take a little while to recover. Nevertheless, Johnson feels that he needs to go ahead and get the surgery over with since no other types of treatments seem to be helping.
The one thing that pops into my mind, though, is will this be the end of his season? When he had the surgery in June of 2008, he didn’t play for the rest of the MLB season. Will Johnson be able to recuperate, get back with the team and play on the field before the end of this year’s season? Only time will tell….
