The San Francisco Giants head into Game 4 of the 2010 NLCS with a 2-1 lead in the series against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Giants will look to secure that lead with another win while the Phillies will look to tie the series.
The Giants, who have been out-pitching the Phillies in the Championship Series this year, will put left-handed 21-year-old rookie Madison Bumgarner on the mound for Game 4 tonight. Against Atlanta in the clincher for the NLDS, he pitched six innings allowing only two runs. Through the regular season, this first year starter went 7-6 with a 3.00 earned run average. For the postseason, he is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA.
The Phillies, who need both an outstanding pitching and batting performance tonight, will counter with right-handed pitcher Joe Blanton. Now, Blanton has only relief pitched on October 3 against Atlanta since his last start on September 24 at Washington. His last game against the Giants was on August 18 when he pitched 6 1/3 innings allowing just two runs and eight hits. He walked no batters and struck out seven in that game. This will be his first postseason appearance this year and through the regular season, he went 9-6 with an ERA of 4.82.
If the pitching doesn’t decide the game tonight, which it more than likely will, the bullpen favors the Giants. Cody Ross has three home runs in this series, which equals the same amount of home runs the Phillies have hit for the entire postseason. For the year, the Phillies have an ERA of 3.93 while the Giants have a 3.30 ERA but when you knock it down to the last 10 games, the Giants outrank the Phillies 1.85 ERA to a 3.82 ERA.
