Although he has not shown us the greatest playing tactics, former Chicago Bears’ fullback Jason McKie has now been acquired by the New Orleans Saints. McKie has signed only a one-year contract with the Saints, but it is more than enough for this free agent 5-11, 247-pound fullback.
Chicago had received Mike Martz, a new offensive coordinator, who had intentions on downplaying McKie’s role a bit, which to many would be understandable since during his time with the Bears, he had only six touchdowns, 364 receiving yards, and 84 rushing yards in his 47 starts with the team.
The Bears went on to release McKie sometime during the middle of March with no regards to the two years that were left in his contract with Chicago. He has been the starting fullback for the Chicago Bears for the last four seasons, participated in all 16 games in the 2009 season, and started in 11 of those.
McKie was in the 2002 NFL Draft, but went undrafted. He was then acquired by the Dallas Cowboys after having practiced with the Philadelphia Eagles. He then went on to be a Chicago Bear in 2003.
McKie is not the only former Bear that is with the New Orleans Saints now. Alex Brown, former Bear defensive end, was also released by Chicago earlier this offseason and was picked up by the Saints.
Now, McKie, as well as Brown, will join a Super Bowl winning team, the New Orleans Saints. McKie is not a bad player, as some may believe. I think he just needs a little boost from the right managers and coordinators. I hope that he will find that at New Orleans.
