Thursday, the Baltimore Ravens confirmed that they have given a one-year contract deal to safety Ken Hamlin. No specific details of this deal have been confirmed or released as of yet, but it is clear that he’ll take a pay deduction.
Hamlin is a former Dallas Cowboy, who he has been with since they acquired him as a free agent back in 2007 after sporting a Seattle jersey for the previous four years. He only received a cost effective and short-term one-year contract with Dallas. Then a year later, Hamlin received a six-year contract deal that compared to Bob Sanders valued at $39 million, which also included a guaranteed $15 million.
This one-year contract deal that Hamlin is receiving from the Ravens is pretty much a one-year timeline for him to prove himself and they honestly aren’t doing it out of the kindness of their hearts. If you take a deeper look into it, Hamlin is practically just insurance for Ed Reed, who is out due to hip surgery with an unclear timetable for return but they do know that he won’t be able to return at the beginning part of the season.
To explain a bit about Hamlin, though; over the past couple of seasons, his playing ability has definitely not improved but it has diminished. And although he did start improving at the end of the season when he returned from his high ankle sprain, he wasn’t nearly at the same level at the time of signing.
If he can’t prove that he can be a safety for the Ravens, I’m not sure that next year someone else will want him. Let’s hope for the sake of the Ravens as well as Hamlin’s future that he can successfully pull himself together, get back into the quality of the game with superior skill and speed and prove that he belongs in football – not only to himself and the Ravens but to his fans as well.
