After much debate and speculation, Miami Dolphins new head coach Joe Philbin has decided to take a chance on rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill to start Week 1 under center.
Over the course of training camp and the first few preseason games, David Garrard and Matt Moore had been rumored to be the only ones competing for the starting job heading into the NFL regular season. Once Garrard required surgery on his knee and Tannehill started turning a lot of heads during training camp and in preseason games, Philbin seems confident that the rookie is the right man for the job to start the season off as the number one guy against the Houston Texans.
As of right now, there’s no bad blood between the new Dolphins Coach and Moore after the decision was made. Apparently, Moore has been very professional about the demotion even after an impressive finished the season last year.
It remains uncertain if Garrard will become the starter once fit to take the field. After undergoing the surgery on his knee, Garrard was scheduled to be out as much as four to six weeks. The injury doesn’t appear to be season-ending or a situation that will keep him out an extended amount of time, but that all depends on his recovery and play on the field after his return.
So at this point in time, the job under center in Miami is Tannehill’s to lose. The Texas A&M product will be one of three rookies quarterbacks to get the nod for the season-opener along with the top two picks in the 2012 NFL Draft in Andrew Luck (Indianapolis Colts) and Robert Griffin III (Washington Redskins).
Both Griffin and Luck have shown promise in the preseason, but Tannehill might be able to overshadow the two during the regular season if he can live up to being drafted with the eighth overall pick.
