Friday, the Los Angeles Lakers announced that Kobe Bryant has previously had arthroscopic surgery done on his right knee. The surgery was performed just last week and went very well. The Dallas Cowboys and their first round draft pick Dez Bryant have agreed to terms of a five-year contract that is worth $11.8 total with $8.5 of that guaranteed.

Bryant is a wide receiver that was chosen in the first round as the 24th draft pick overall in the 2010 NFL Draft back in April. Bryant, who was drafted from Oklahoma State, is the first player to sign with a team out of the first round draft picks.

The signing of Bryant comes just in time for him to be able to start training camp, which commences in San Antonio this Saturday, July 24. The Dallas Cowboys are the first NFL team to open their training camp this year. Continue Reading…

In an effort to strengthen their team’s offense Thursday, the Angels made a move that leaded to the gain from the Royals of Alberto Callaspo in exchange for two pitchers: left-hander Will Smith and right-hander Sean O’Sullivan.

The upcoming start of a four game series against the Rangers, who are the front-runners in the American League West division, the three-time champion of the AL West division needed to step up their game in hopes of regaining that title this year.

Callaspo is a 27-year-old switch-hitter that hit his career high in the 2009 season when he had 11 home runs and 73 runs batted in when batting a .300. This season with the Royals, Callaspo is currently hitting a .275 with 8 home runs and 43 runs batted in. Continue Reading…

This past MLB off-season, the Baltimore Orioles signed closer Mike Gonzalez to a $12 million, two-year deal. He isn’t a stranger to receiving “boos” especially when he blew two saves during three outings. Right now, though, his main focus is being the most effective closer that he can possibly be for his entire team now that he has been activated from the 60-day disabled list. Tuesday night, negotiations between Kyle Parker and the Colorado Rockies seemed to have failed. It now appears that Parker will be returning to Clemson as the starting quarterback for 2010.

Last season, as a freshman at Clemson, Park successfully threw 20 touchdowns and was a first round draft pick in the 2010 MLB draft in June. He had apparently been discussing serious deals with the Colorado Rockies in order to join the team. Two pitchers of the San Diego Padres have been placed on the 14-day disabled list Friday. Both Mat Latos (pictured) and Mike Adams will not be participating in the upcoming games.

Latos won’t see any field action until he recovers from a left strained oblique muscle that he suffered when he – wait for it – tried to keep from sneezing! Yes, it’s apparently true that you can strain your oblique muscle by doing this. Latos isn’t the first as Sammy Sosa encountered the same experience years ago. This injury occurred this a week ago in Colorado. He is retroactive for two and a half weeks until July 9. In his 17 starts this MLB season, the right-handed pitcher has a 2.45 ERA and is currently 10-4. Continue Reading…

It’s true – the Celts have re-signed unrestricted free agent Nate Robinson. The point guard signed a two-year contract Friday that will average a salary of about $4 million per season. There are also potential incentives and bonuses for the point guard if he can live up to the terms. Robinson is being signed as a back-up to starter Rajon Rondo but can bring a lot to the table as the back-up.

Robinson was originally acquired by the Celtics back in February from New York as a part of a prestigious five-player trade and played his very first game as a Boston Celtic on February 23, 2010. But first, they have to get there. Across the league, no second place team is further than four games off the pace, which should make for a fight to the finish from west to east.

Everyone’s wondering: Just how have the San Diego Padres done it? How have they taken what looks on paper to be a mediocre lineup and put themselves ahead of the pack in the NL West? The answer is pitching, pitching and more pitching. American League teams are now staring at the specter of playing primarily in the enemy’s park should they make it to the World Series, after losing the All-Star Game 3-1. Controversy still royals around whether the raised stakes have been good for the MLB, but teams are now putting that behind them and looking ahead to the second half of the 2010 season.

Judging by the standings around the American League, the next couple months should be entertaining indeed. The Rangers’ 4 ½-game lead over the Angels is the biggest in the major leagues. Even though the team’s owners are bankrupt, they recently acquired Cliff Lee from Seattle to help keep them ahead of the Los Angeles Angels, who have been struggling lately and will need an offensive jolt if they’re going to entertain notions of playing in October.
