Gaudreau re-signs with Flames

13 October 2025

The Calgary Flames have locked up Johnny "Johnny Hockey" Gaudreau for the next six years.

The Flames are being picked by many to return to the playoffs this season, and Gaudreau is a key part of the team's future. As a rookie, Gaudreau was second on the Flames in points with 24 goals and 40 assists in 80 games.

The Flames announced on Monday that the club and Gaudreau have agreed to a six-year contract extension.

It's a bit surprising that Gaudreau was willing to finally sign for less than $7 million per season, but the structure of his deal may explain why he ultimately caved. Gaudreau was tied for 6th in the National Hockey League for points last season, just behind big name players like Jamie Benn, Sidney Crosby, Joe Thorton, and Eric Karlsson. He led the Flames in goals, assists and points last season.

"I know Lewis very well, and he will not accuse the team", Mercedes non-executive chairman Niki Lauda said on Sunday night. Lewis knows we do everything possible to give him the best auto and the best engine".

"The way he's being compensated is for who he is and what we think he can get to", Treliving continued. He's a good player and is just 23 years-old.

Mark Giordano will wear the C once again for the Flames this season, with Sean Monahan and Troy Brouwer serving as alternate captains. The contract can not be a noose. "He's ready for that".

The Flames did not want to pay Gaudreau north of Giordano's salary cap hit.

"I think you notice right away on the power play today ... he just makes plays that other guys don't make. His lateral movement is second to none".
