The gunman was carrying a stolen weapon, McDonnell said, and after the shooting he allegedly searched Owen's body for his handgun "with the intent to use it to murder" another deputy who was arriving to the scene.

A California teenager befriended a wounded suspected gunman and kept him calm until he was captured by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies after gunning down one of their own, the teen's mom said.

The shooting occurred shortly after noon as Owen, 53, and another deputy responded to a 911 call from a woman reporting a burglary at an apartment building in the 3200 block of West Avenue J-7, authorities said.

Owen, a married father of two grown children, was a 29-year department veteran who had been promoted to sergeant five years ago.

McDonnell said at a news conference at the Lancaster Station that Lovell - whose name the sheriff refused to utter - has been arrested 11 times, first as a juvenile on suspicion of selling marijuana, and was jailed or imprisoned twice.

At the news conference, the sheriff said Owen was a model peace officer who was well-liked by local residents who had met him.

One of Owen's adult sons and his stepdaughter, as well his mother, also were at his bedside, Tyler said. The first responding deputy, McDonnell said, shot numerous times at Lovell and hit him once in the shoulder.

Deputy District Attorney Michael Blake said more charges could be filed, and he did not know yet if he would pursue the death penalty.

"He then stood over him and executed Sgt. Owen by firing four additional rounds into his body", McDonnell said Wednesday.

Authorities say Lovell was captured after he pointed a gun at another deputy, stole Owen's patrol auto, rammed another police vehicle with it, and held two teenagers hostage at knifepoint in a building.

With her husband Mario, 41, and 4-year-old daughter Damaris by her side, she said she was a housekeeper for Owen.

A large cordon was established to contain the suspect, who entered another home, where there were two teenagers, Katz said.

News reports showed a bloody, shirtless man on his knees being handcuffed.

The suspect, a parolee, had a gunshot wound and was taken to a hospital.

Antelope Valley College criminal justice major Gerard Rivers, 23, of Lancaster, said Owen helped influenced his decision to choose law enforcement as a career. The award was given after the deputies apprehended a gunman in a bulletproof vest who had taken a driver hostage and used him as a human shield.
