Samardzija struggles, Giants lose 5-2 to Cubs in Game 2

12 October 2025

Players dressed hastily, the rustling of their belongings being lugged away serving as one of the few distractions from the silence.

Samardzija lasted just two innings in the shortest start of his career and San Francisco was shut down by Chicago's bullpen in the loss to the Cubs on Saturday night, putting the Giants on the brink of elimination two games into their best-of-five NL Division Series.

The Giants arrived here as the battle-tested wizards of October, having won championships in 2010, 2012 and 2014. In fact, they've not even played in the World Series since 1945. They closed the season with four consecutive wins to clinch a postseason berth, and have always a tendency to come alive at the very last moment.

The teams will travel after the contest and play Game 3 as scheduled on Monday in Los Angeles.

All that stands between the Cubs and their second straight appearance in the NLCS is one more win - and Madison Bumgarner.

RHP Kyle Hendricks will take the hill for the Cubs.

The Giants had at least one hit in each of the first four innings, including leadoff singles in the first three, but Lester held them off each time.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy has thrived in the postseason, his decisions rarely inviting scrutiny. The major league ERA leader didn't quite have his best command in the game, which is something he really requires to be effective.

Samardzija spent almost seven seasons with the Cubs and later declined overtures for a reunion.

Ben Zobrist got things started for Chicago with an RBI single in the first. They fell behind early when the Cubs scored a run in the first, and a big inning in the second essentially put the game out of reach for an offense that has consistently struggled to score runs all season.

Aid arrives in Haiti, but desperation grows in cut-off towns
Officially, the hospital has treated 55 patients for cholera, but dozens of people were waiting outdoors to be seen by doctors. People in the seaside communities of Port Salut and Les Cayes said little to no aid had reached them by Sunday.

According to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports, Baez and teammate Pedro Strop had a spirited conversation in the dugout prior to Baez's at-bat in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Baez reportedly called his shot according to Strop's recollection of the chat.

One bright spot: Samardzija was pulled for pinch hitter Gregor Blanco in the top of the third. Brandon Belt's sacrifice fly cut the Cubs' lead to 4-2. Seemingly the forgotten man in the Cubs' rotation with Jake Arrieta and Kyle Hendricks dominating the headlines this season, Lester proved he still can produce like an ace.

Travis Wood, who replaced Hendricks, got four outs and homered against George Kontos in the fourth. The ball hit him in his right forearm and then his midsection. You'd have to believe that Johnny Cueto would return on three days of rest in a must-win Game 4, but he did just throw 118 pitches in Game 1.

Even then, the Cubs pressed on.

Cubs reliever Travis Wood reacts to his fourth-inning home run. He joined Rick Sutcliffe and Kerry Wood.

Eight innings with 10 strikeouts, no walks, three hits.

Just like that, the Giants found themselves in a hole.

"Obviously, there's some pitches you like to have back", he said. "There's no need to look any further than Monday".

"I did not know that", Wood said.

In other action Friday, the Indians took a two-games-to-none lead over the Boston Red Sox in their best-of-five American League Division Series with a 6-0 victory at Progressive Field in Cleveland.
