The Los Angeles Lakers are coming off yet another early exit in two straight seasons in the NBA playoffs after winning two consecutive NBA titles before Phil Jackson decided to call it a career after being knocked out by the eventual NBA champion Dallas Mavericks last year.
With Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol not exactly playing up to expectations during the playoffs, a blockbuster trade may very well be on the horizon for the Lakers over the summer. Along with potential trades being made by the Lakers’ front office, GM Mitch Kupchak and company will also be faced with some tough decisions in terms of free agency.
The Lakers’ most recent additions to the team in Ramon Sessions and Jordan Hill have options on their contract. Sessions has a player option and Hill as a team option. The consensus has been that Hill proved himself throughout the playoffs and will be given a contract extension, but Sessions’ future is up in the air with the 26-year-old point guard considering opting out of his current deal to secure his long-term future in Los Angeles or elsewhere.
Unlike Hill, Sessions wasn’t all that impressive in the playoffs and as a result may have changed the team’s stance on his long-term future in Los Angeles.
Reportedly, Sessions wants to stay with the Lakers by signing a long-term deal or opting in for his final year worth $4.55 million. Rumor has it that Sessions wants some long-term security and that may be enough to lead him to opt-out of the last year of his deal.
Unfortunately, the Lakers seem to be exploring all sorts of point guard options via trade and free agency. This may ultimately lead Sessions to pursue signing with the another team this summer.
