Wednesday night, the Texas Rangers took on the Florida Marlins. Rangers had to take out a right-handed player in the third inning of the game – Tommy Hunter. He had to leave the Rangers versus Marlin game due to some discomfort that he was experiencing in his right hip.
In the 2 1/3 innings that he pitched, he allowed no hits. In the third inning with one out, he walked Florida Marlins pitcher Anibal Sanchez. He went on to throw three consecutive straight balls to Marlins’ Chris Coghlan. It was then he departed from Wednesday’s game. Left-handed Matt Harrison took Hunter’s spot on the mound and threw the fourth ball, which ended with a walk that went to Hunter.
Earlier this season, Hunter was on the disabled list due a strain to his left oblique. Although he started on the disabled list this season, he won his first two starts afterward. He came into Wednesday’s game 2-0 with an ERA of 1.80 for his two starts of the season and now, he is experiencing a right hip flexor strain.
Right now, Hunter’s next start isn’t until Tuesday when the Rangers will go up against the Pirates. The team seems to be pretty optimistic about Hunter’s injury as well as his return to the team. If he is unable to return to the team, the Rangers have some serious thinking to do as their top players are unable to return playing immediately – Rich Harden and Derek Holland.
Harrison was placed on the disabled list due to biceps tendinitis and Harden was placed on the disabled list just earlier this week but he’ll need longer than this to not only get healthy but get his quality of skill back. The earliest we can expect Harrison to hit the field is going to be early July but even that’s not for sure.
The Rangers may be looking into some trouble ahead if they don’t get things situated soon…
