MLB Match-up: Florida Marlins vs. Philadelphia Phillies

The Philadelphia Phillies have truly seen some recent success and are now back at the top of the NL East division. They haven’t been in the top spot in over three months. Tuesday’s win over the Marlins with a final score of 8-7 moved them up to the first position and past the Atlanta Braves to lead the division – even if it’s just a half a game!

But, what’s going to keep them there?

Well, for one, Cole Hamels is going to be a great asset for the team overall. He is currently seeking a career high shutout streak going into Wednesday’s finale against of a series of four-games against the Marlins. Hamels has the skills to help the Phillies get a larger lead over the Braves in the NL East division.

In his past two starts, Hamel has allowed only seven hits with 13 strikeouts in a whopping 15 scoreless innings. Friday, his scoreless inning stretch was extended to 18, when he kept Milwaukee from scoring and won. However, looking at his record with the Marlins – it doesn’t favor. In 10 starts, he is currently 0-6 with an earned run average of 4.62 since the Phillies beat the Marlins back in September of 2006.

This will be the first time that Hamel will play against rookie Mike Stanton. Stanton is currently six for 13 with five runs batted in in this four-game series and has secured a home run in each of the past three contests in this series. Coming into Wednesday, if he can score another homer, he’ll be the first rookie to do this since 2005 when Dan Johnson of Oakland was able to do it.

Against the Phillies, Marlins’ outfielder Stanton is currently hitting a .382 with four home runs and six runs batted in in a total of eight games against Philadelphia. Among rookies, he is currently tied with Mets’ Ike Davis with 18 home runs this MLB season for second. They are just a single home run behind leader Chicago Cubs’ Tyler Colvin.

On Friday, Andrew Miller of the Marlins helped Florida reach a victory over the Phillies – 6 to 1. He allowed a single run as well as seven hits along with six strikeouts in a total of five innings. This was his first win since July of last year. He is currently 0 and 3 with an earned run average of 5.16 in 10 total games – half of those starts – against the Philadelphia Phillies.
