Derek Holland of the Texas Rangers will more than likely go on the disabled list come this Tuesday. It appears after some examination, he has mild inflammation in his left rotator cuff.
In Sunday’s game against the Twins, Holland felt some numbness in his left hand and was immediately removed from the game in the second inning. He had thrown a little more than 40 pitches and was examined Monday by Dr. Keith Meister. He is expected to be off the field for anywhere up to five days at which time he will probably commence a throwing program. Prior to his removal from the game, Holland had a 4.19 ERA and was 2-1 in four starts with the Texas Rangers.
Currently, it is expected for relief pitcher Pedro Strop to be called upon from AAA Oklahoma City. He will likely remain with the Rangers until this coming Saturday. Tommy Hunter is also at AAA Oklahoma City and he is the one that is most likely to get the call from the Rangers to be the starter who replaces Holland.
Strop has been pitching very well with Oklahoma City as he has a total of 5 saves within 17 games and a 1.74 ERA. He has a scoreless streak of 11 innings and during those 11 innings, he only allowed for one hit. In seven appearances with Texas last year, Strop had a 7.71 ERA.
Hunter had 15 starts with Texas last season and he had a 4.10 ERA and was 9-6. However, Hunter began this MLB season on the DL due to a Spring Training injury to a muscle within his left ribcage. Previous to Monday, Hunter had a 2.91 ERA and was 1-1 with Oklahoma City.
The decision is still uncertain at this time as the Rangers are wanting to wait to make a final decision on a starter until after Hunter starts the game against New Orleans Monday night, which is the Rangers off day prior to a three-game series against the White Sox on Tuesday.
