Two pitchers of the San Diego Padres have been placed on the 14-day disabled list Friday. Both Mat Latos (pictured) and Mike Adams will not be participating in the upcoming games.
Latos won’t see any field action until he recovers from a left strained oblique muscle that he suffered when he – wait for it – tried to keep from sneezing! Yes, it’s apparently true that you can strain your oblique muscle by doing this. Latos isn’t the first as Sammy Sosa encountered the same experience years ago. This injury occurred this a week ago in Colorado. He is retroactive for two and a half weeks until July 9. In his 17 starts this MLB season, the right-handed pitcher has a 2.45 ERA and is currently 10-4.
The 22-year-old pitcher was originally going to be limited this season since it is his first Major League season. During spring training, it was revealed that the Padres had hopes of keeping Latos to a limit of somewhere between 150 and 180 innings this season. His arm will be put to rest for a little while but he will be good for the young ace. He’ll be able to rejoin the Padres in rotation July 24.
Adams also won’t see any field action for a little while due to the same exact injury at Latos. However, his injury didn’t come from attempting to hold in a sneeze; instead, Adams suffered his strained muscle after throwing a pitch in the final game for San Diego prior to the All-Star break. He immediately left the game upon feeling the pain. One of the best relievers that the Padres have, Adams has an ERA of 2.18 in a total of 42 games and is 2-1 this season.
To replace the two pitchers on the active roster, the San Diego Padres have recalled both outfielder Luis Durango as well as pitcher Ernesto Frieri from AAA Portland.
