Right now, both of these teams are trying to make it to the playoffs while the San Francisco Giants is trying to keep the lead over the San Diego Padres to capture a National League West division title, which they haven’t won since 2003. The Padres are currently 3 games behind the division-leading Giants and are hoping to close in on that 3-game lead that the Giants have over them starting today when the Giants host the Padres for a three-game series – the final series of the regular season.
Popular Online Sportsbook Bodog has the Giants listed as -167 favorites on the money line for Friday’s game against the Padres.
The Padres, who are going to be attempting a sweep this weekend, in hopes of capturing the NL West division title and head into the playoffs, are going to hand the ball to starting pitcher Clayton Richard. The left-handed pitcher is currently 13-9 for the season with an earned run average of 3.91. In his last six appearances, Richard is only 1-4 with an earned run average of 4.42.
To counter Padres’ LHP Richard, the Giants will hand the ball over to starting pitcher Matt Cain. This will be the fourth time that Cain will meet Richard this season. The right-handed pitcher is currently 13-10 for the season with an earned run average of 2.95. Cain is currently 4-0 with an earned run average of 2.45 in his last seven starts.
In his last four appearances, Padres’ Gonzalez is 0 for 13 and has three homers against Giants’ RHP Cain this year. Against San Diego, rookie Giants’ Buster Posey is 10 for 26 and has three homers. He also just hit his 17th career home run Thursday.
San Francisco just needs to win one game in order to clinch the division title and the possibility of playoff elimination for the Padres is there. Will they do it or will the Padres be able to keep some hope for playoff contention by sweeping the Giants this weekend?
