Shawn Springs Released by Patriots

The New England Patriots are now releasing CB Shawn Springs. He has found himself to have limited play over the course of the last year despite the fact just signing a $10.5 million agreement for three years before last season.

Springs was initially acquired by the Patriots to add some depth to their defensive line; however, he couldn’t show that he was able to do what it took to get things done in addition to an injury that he incurred. The Patriots have no need for Springs any longer as cornerback. He only participated in a total of 12 games last year, out of which eight were starts, with 39 tackles and a single interception. This isn’t the only reason he isn’t needed by the Patriots though.

The Patriots created other options for themselves though when the NFL Draft was here last month. In the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots used their pick to choose Devin McCourty, cornerback from Rutgers. In addition, the Patriots also re-signed a current veteran CB, Leigh Bodden. In addition, Darius Butler is still on the team, whom the Patriots drafted in the second round of last NFL season as well as Jonathan Wilhite who has been with the Patriots for three years now. Another player that is still on the charts for position as cornerback is Terrence Wheatley although he is probably the least likely to get a position as cornerback for the Patriots.

Springs has played for the Seattle Seahawks starting in 1997 when he was overall the third pick in the draft. He went on to play as a Seahawk until 2003. He joined the Washington Redskins in 2004 and sported their jersey until 2008. He was then acquired by the Patriots. But, now with the release from the New England Patriots, what is his fate? What does the future hold for Shawn Springs?
