The Buffalo Bills likely had major arrangements for their second-year tight end Shawn Nelson, but those have changed now – at least for the first four games of the 2010 NFL season due to be suspended by the NFL in violation of the league’s substance abuse policy.
The NFL made the official announcement early Friday of the suspension for Shawn Nelson of the Buffalo Bills to miss the first four regular season games of the 2010 NFL season.
Drafted during the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft our of Southern Mississippi, Nelson started in a total of 12 games during his first season with the Buffalo Bills and caught 17 passes for a total of 156 yards in addition to a single touchdown as a rookie.
As for his suspension, he will be able to attend practice for the rest of the preseason with his team and play in any preseason games that are left; however, he will be unable to attend once regular season starts up. His official suspension will begin on September 4, just over a week before the Bills open up the regular season with a game against the Miami Dolphins.
Apart from missing the first regular season opening game against the Dolphins, Nelson will also miss three other regular season games against the New York Jets, New England Patriots, as well as the Green Bay Packers.
Nelson will be eligible to return to play with the Buffalo Bills October 3, just in time for the Week 5 game at home against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Due to this suspension, it leaves the Bills even more short-handed at tight end. Apart from Nelson’s suspension, the Bills were faced with a knee injury that Derek Schouman sustained Thursday during the preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts, which the Bills won 34-21.
