Ravens Acquire Veteran QB Marc Bulger

One team’s release is another team’s gain. In this case, the release of veteran quarterback Marc Bulger from the Rams back in April is the Ravens’ gain. The Baltimore Ravens and QB Bulger have come to an agreement for a one-year contract deal that totals nearly $4 million, which could ultimately be worth even more provided that the quarterback is able to meet particular incentives.

Bulger won’t be competing for the starting position though as this is already set in place with Joe Flacco as the current starter for the Ravens so Bulger will be competing for the second spot behind Flacco – the backup position should anything happen to Flacco. However, signing Bulger was a step for the Ravens that indicated that they felt like they needed some type of “insurance” because they weren’t completely content with the backups that they currently had – John Beck and Troy Smith.

Bulger, who was drafted out of West Virginia in the 2000 NFL Draft sixth round by the New Orleans Saints, spent his entire NFL career with the St. Louis Rams. He was with St. Louis for a total of eight NFL seasons in which he threw 22, 814 yards with 122 touchdowns as well as 93 interceptions. He appeared in 96 total games and started all but one of those games with a record posted of 41-54.

With the Rams last season alone, Bulger was able to accumulate 1469 yards and had six interceptions as well as five touchdowns. This came in the nine games that the quarterback appeared in.

The only concern for Bulger that the Ravens should worry about would be injuries. Looking at his record, the 33-year-old quarterback has had multiple injuries in the past several years. Training camp for the Ravens will begin next month and can hopefully show some hope for the team and show Baltimore that they made the right choice by signing the Pro-Bowler.
