The Dallas Morning News is reporting that tight end John Phillips for the Dallas Cowboys may have a torn ACL. This injury would have occurred during Sunday night’s Hall of Fame preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals during the middle of the second quarter, which the Cowboys won.
Prior to being injured in Sunday night’s game, Phillips had four catches for a total of 60 yards. Phillips, drafted out of the 2009 NFL Draft in the sixth round, is a second year player for the Cowboys. In addition to the four catches, he took on some decent blocking during the game as well. After such a great game for Phillips, it’s going to be disappointing if he has to miss the entire season.
Phillips is expected to undergo an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the damage to his knee. If he has indeed torn his ACL, Phillips will likely miss the entire upcoming NFL season. With Phillips being the most improved player at training camp this year, this will be a huge blow to the Dallas Cowboys.
When Phillips left the game Sunday night, it allowed for Scott Sicko, an undrafted free agent this year out of New Hampshire who you may remember earlier stating that he refused to play professional football in the NFL if he went undrafted, to join the Cowboys and get five receptions for a total of 44 yards. Apart from Sicko, the only tight end on the Cowboys roster is Kevin Brock. Brock took a sprain to his left ankle on Sunday just a little while prior to Phillips injury. The only other option apart from Brock is Martellus Bennett, but he wasn’t on the field Sunday night due to an injury to his ankle, which he is still healing.
