It appears that one of the best start streaks in the NFL has officially come to an end as four-time NFL MVP quarterback Peyton Manning will sit out Week 1 of the NFL regular season against the division rival Houston Texans. Apparently, the neck surgery has taken much longer to recover from as one of the best quarterbacks in the league has no idea when he will be back under center for the Indianapolis Colts.
With Peyton Manning sitting out Week 1, the 227-game start streak will come to an end and Brett Favre’s record of 297 straight games is intact and in no danger of getting broken in his lifetime. Even though Manning would have loved to become the NFL’s greatest ironman ahead of Brett Favre, this recovery from neck surgery could be much more serious than once thought as some people are saying that the season and or his career is in jeopardy.
As of right now, there is no timetable for Peyton Manning’s return and the recent signing of veteran quarterback Kerry Collins is making more and more sense moving forward. Not only will Kerry Collins be under center for Week 1, but he will be tested right out of the gate as the Indianapolis Colts face off against the Houston Texans in an important divisional game.
The Houston Texans also have their injury problems with Pro Bowl running back Arian Foster dealing with a hamstring injury. Texans head coach Gary Kubiak has said that Arian Foster is day-to-day right now and his playing status is uncertain for Sunday’s showdown with the Colts.
Obviously, Peyton Manning missing this divisional game is a much bigger disadvantage for the Colts when compared to Arian Foster being out for the Texans. It will be interesting to see how well the Colts can play in Week 1 with Kerry Collins as their starter.
