San Diego Chargers @ New England Patriots Sun. Sept. 18, 2011 4:15 p.m. EST
Perhaps the most intriguing matchup of Week 2 in the NFL will be the San Diego Chargers taking on the red-hot New England Patriots. With the Patriots coming off an epic performance against the Miami Dolphins in Week 1 where Tom Brady lit up the scoreboard with record-breaking numbers (517 yards, 4 TDs), the MVP talk has begun surrounding the Golden Boy as New England looks like they could be the team to beat in the AFC Conference this season.
Last year was a disappointment to say the least for the San Diego Chargers as they dominated the league statistically, but failed to win the AFC West division title or make it back into the playoffs. This time around Philip Rivers and company will look to get back on track as one of the league’s elite teams in order to make a run at what seems to be an elusive Super Bowl appearance.
In Week 1, the Chargers struggled a bit to get going against the Minnesota Vikings as Philip Rivers threw two interceptions and the offense looked rusty, but in classic Chargers fashion the team came back to life late in the game and came out with the victory to start the season at 1-0.
This week things will get much more challenging for the San Diego Chargers as they will head to Foxboro to face a New England Patriots team that seems flawless on offense. The only way I see the Chargers making a game of it is by getting things going defensively and forcing Tom Brady to make mistakes.
San Diego should have no trouble scoring as New England doesn’t have the best defense, but this game will be all offense with the team with the football last probably being the winner.
As of right now, the New England Patriots are favored to come out on top with a -7 point spread. This is too high in my opinion as this game will most likely be decided by a game-winning field goal.
Take the Chargers at +7.
