NFC Divisional Playoffs: New Orleans Saints @ San Francisco 49ers

New Orleans Saints @ San Francisco 49ers Sat. Jan. 14, 2012 4:30 p.m. EST

It would be hard to argue at this point in the NFL playoffs that the New Orleans Saints aren’t the best team left standing. The defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, AFC North champion Baltimore Ravens and the NFC West champion San Francisco 49ers may still be in the mix with games this weekend, but the Saints just seem to have that edge and never-say-die attitude which is reminiscent to when they won it all a few years ago.

With that being said, it will be interesting to see how Drew Brees and the potent Saints’ offense are able to hand the lockdown defense of the San Francisco 49ers in the Bay Area this Saturday. This has been a breakout season for the 49ers as new head coach Jim Harbaugh seems to be the answer to this storied franchise’s problems, but whether or not this defense can contain the Saints’ offense remains to be seen.

Perhaps the most intriguing part of this matchup between NFC Conference heavyweights will be Drew Brees going head-to-head with Patrick Willis and the 49ers’ defense. Brees hasn’t had much trouble facing tough defenses all season long and that might continue this weekend in San Francisco, but the 49ers have had plenty of time to prepare for the Detroit Lions or the New Orleans Saints which means they will almost certainly be ready for the potent passing game.

As of right now, the New Orleans Saints have been given the slight edge to come out on top in this playoff game with a -4 point spread. The Saints should get the win in my opinion, but I don’t believe they will cover against the 49ers.
