Looking at the New York Jets roster, you will see that defensive end and two time Pro-Bowler Shaun Ellis is the veteran lineman with the longest permanent status on the team.
The Jets apparently allowed trade offers to come in for Shaun Ellis over the past several months but haven’t found anyone that is willing to take the trade, according to a source close to the situation. This source also claimed that Ellis was deprived of an extension with the Jets. His current contract has him making $3.35 million in his last season with the Jets, which is the 2010 season.
This isn’t the first time that the Jets have tried for a trade rather than an extension of a players contract. It happened earlier with Alan Faneca. They weren’t able to get any solid offers for a trade and the Jets released him from the team.
If a trade offer doesn’t appear, more than likely the Jets will keep Ellis for the last season of his contract rather than release him from the team as they did with Faneca since this year’s salary for Ellis is rather manageable. Although it is unofficial, a spokesperson for the New York Jets has said that he does expect the 2010 NFL roster for the Jets to include defensive end Ellis.
If the Jets don’t decide to renegotiate a contract extension with Ellis, he will become a free agent after the 2010 NFL season. However, one has to wonder if another team will try to pick him up. I mean, no one apparently made any true offers to acquire Shaun Ellis from the New York Jets in a trade that the Jets willingly invited and encouraged.
32-year-old Ellis has 68 sacks, which makes him third in position on the all-time sacks list for the franchise. His past season had 56 tackles with 6.5 sacks.
