The World Cup in Johannesburg has been taking the sporting world by storm over the past few days, with a recent continued push by the US team making a big hit on the 18th. Down by two in the 42nd minute of the game, the US successfully pulled together to tie up their second match of the global competition against Slovenia, the current leader in Group C looking to advance in the playoffs.
The key players that landed the two goals to tie up the match were Landon Donovan and Michael Bradley - the son of US coach Bob Bradley. Donovan’s big play came in on the heels of the last Slovenian goal in the 48th minute with Bradley’s tie making kick driving home on the 82nd. It would have been a win for the US had things continued to go well with a final third goal in their name occurring in the 86th minute; however, the final goal headed into the net by Jozy Altidore was reversed at the last minute by referee Koman Couilibaly on the grounds that a foul occurred immediately before the goal landed.
This second tie of the competition follows on the heels of the recent match-up where the US tied with England in the first round of the games, giving both teams their first point for the initial plays. Currently the US stands with 2 points from a record of 0-0-2 behind Slovenia’s 4 points at 1-0-1 and England pulling up the slack at 0-0-1. At the end of the first rounds, the two teams with the highest score will advance to the next phase. Should the US continue to do well and ideally land a win in their next match they will continue on to have a chance at the coveted World Cup - something that has been seen as virtually unattainable by any US team in the past.
