Bomb suspect accused of trying to kill cops to be arraigned

14 October 2025

(NEW YORK) The man accused of multiple bombings last month in NY and New Jersey that injured more than 30 people is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Thursday since his September 19 arrest.

The bombings occurred on the eve of the UN General Assembly meeting here, caused an increase in the already massive police presence in the city and triggered even greater cooperation between the NY and New Jersey in pursuit of the suspect. Union County prosecutors charged Rahami with five counts of attempted murder of a police officer and weapons charges.

Liguori entered the not guilty plea to New Jersey charges on behalf of his bed-ridden client, who only answered "yes" in a barely audible voice in response to a number of questions from the judge. It was Rahimi's first public appearance since last month's bombings and police chase.

Authorities have said Rahami praised the late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and kept a journal in which he expressed outrage at American policy in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and the Palestinian territories.

He is also facing federal charges for the September 17th bombings.

Five additional pipe bombs were found in Rahami's hometown of Elizabeth and a second device was found in Chelsea and subsequently defused.

A man accused of setting off bombs in New Jersey and NY has made his first court appearance on charges he tried to fatally shoot police officers trying to capture him. Officer Angela Padilla, one of the officers wounded in the shootout, attended along with seven other Linden cops.

He bought bomb components on eBay, made a video of himself testing out homemade explosives, and kept a journal expressing outrage at the US "slaughter" of overseas jihadists, officials said.

He had been living with his family in New Jersey where they run a chicken shop business. Harinder Bains, owner of Merdie's Tavern, said he was watching CNN on his laptop from another business across the street.
