Confirmed Cases of Hepatitis A Linked to Virginia Tropical Smoothie Cafes

29 August 2025

Patrons who went there from July 28 to August 18 may have been exposed, and anyone who ate or drank there from August 12 to 18 may still benefit from preventive treatment, the department said.

Genetic testing shows the illnesses were caused by a strain of hepatitis A that has been associated with past outbreaks due to frozen strawberries from Egypt.

They said the case was being investigated as part of a cluster of 35 recent cases statewide that may be linked to smoothies from the Tropical Smoothie Cafe chain.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe voluntarily withdrew all of the strawberries sourced from Egypt and found an alternate supply. This product has been removed from use at all Tropical Smoothie locations in Virginia.

Marler said in a phone interview late Thursday afternoon that the law firm is now representing at least four other people who are sick and are believed to have gotten sick from Tropical Smoothie Cafe.

Smartphone Not Getting Android 7.0 Nougat; Other Sony Devices Will Do
Unfortunately, much older Google Nexus models, such as the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 (2013), won't be getting the Android 7.0 Nougat. HTC announced today that the unlocked HTC 10 will be first on the docket to receive Android 7.0 Nougat.

Separately, a class action lawsuit has been filed on behalf of people who were exposed to hepatitis A at Tropical Smoothie Cafe and received a vaccine or other treatment that prevented them from getting sick.

Tropical Smoothie Café responded to the lawsuits in an emailed statement.

"We have not received notice of the suit", Tropical Smoothie Cafe said in a statement to FOX5.

Exposure can occur through direct contact with another person who has the infection or by consuming food or drinks that had been contaminated, health officials said. Anyone who has not been vaccinated for hepatitis A may be susceptible to the virus.

Symptoms of a Hepatitis A infection include: fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, joint pain, dark urine, clay-colored stools and yellow skin or eyes. According to federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 1,239 cases of hepatitis A reported throughout the United States in 2014. "In fact, I just got an email from someone (in Virginia) who said I'm lying in the hospital bed with hepatitis A". Authorities say individuals who had a strawberry drink from any Tropical Smoothie Cafe between August 5 and August 8 are at the highest risk of infection, but warned that anyone who had a strawberry drink there in the last 50 days is at risk.
