Criminal charges are pending against the driver of the bus at the center of a fatal crash on I-10 Sunday morning.

Trooper Melissa Matey says the driver also did not have a commercial license.

A bus full of construction workers hit a firetruck on an elevated highway Sunday, killing two people and injuring about 40, Louisiana State Police said.

A St. John the Baptist Parish firefighter has been identified as one of the two people killed in a auto crash on I-10 this morning.

A spokesperson for state police said the crash happened as first responders were investigating a previous vehicle accident that was reported before 7 a.m.

Matey describes them as volunteers heading from New Orleans to Baton Rouge to help flood victims.

A second area of disturbed weather is located located about a hundred miles south of the coast of southwestern Louisiana. An area of high pressure over most of the southeastern U.S. means that the system may be pushed into the Gulf.

The charter bus came across the right lane when it struck the ladder truck and hit the three firemen, sending them over the guardrail and into the water. A back seat passenger in one of those vehicles was pronounced dead on the scene, police say.

St. John the Baptist Parish President Natalie Robottom said in a statement that Chauvin was "one of the bravest and most dedicated firefighters that I know".

The other two were injured. A second person was killed in another vehicle that was hit by the bus.

About 40 people were taken to hospitals in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Hammond and LaPlace, she said.

One of the St. John the Baptist Parish firefighters is in critical but stable condition, while the other has moderate injuries, Matey said. Rodriguez, who is from Honduras, was in the US illegally, the network reported, citing Matey.
