Police officers from the Ithaca Police Department and the Cornell University Police Department responded to a large fight at College Avenue and Campus Road at 1:57 a.m. Sunday, according to a press release from the Ithaca Police Department.

Investigators said several fights took place after a student-organized event at Willard Straight Hall on the Cornell campus which was attended by several hundred people.

One Ithaca student has died, a second is being treated for non life-threatening injuries at Upstate University Hospital.

Both Cornell and Ithaca College, which both started classes last week, are offering counseling to its students.

Meanwhile, officials from the Ithaca Police Department have confirmed that they have launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident with the help of several other local law enforcement agencies.

Authorities have yet to recover the weapon used in the stabbing while also telling that it was the first homicide in Ithaca in almost five years.

According to police, witnesses are now being interviewed as authorities work to create a suspect profile. A larger, school-wide gathering is being planned.
