The 2010 World Cup is rapidly approaching and the deadline for all the 32 teams participating in the World Cup this year in South Africa are required to have their final roster of 23 men in by 1 June. The United States have finalized their team roster by making the cut of seven men from the initial 30 man rosters.
Some of the men that made the cut for the final roster were actually considered long shots. Two forwards that will gain huge recognition by making the cut are Herculez Gomez, who was honored as the Mexican League’s leading scorer, and Edson Buddle, who is the leading scorer with the Los Angeles Galaxy in Major League Soccer. These two were once considered long shots mainly due to the fact that neither of them have ever participated in a World Cup event.
In addition, probably one of the best veteran players didn’t make the cut. The coach is definitely taking a huge risk by not including veteran player Brian Ching on the final 23-man roster for this year’s World Cup. The coach ultimately wanted to take Ching, since he does have experience and can help lead the team to victory in addition to being a preferred player of Coach Bradley, but with Ching’s recent hamstring injury, he didn’t want to take the risk of Ching hurting himself as well as the injury affecting him so much that he would be unable to participate with the rest of the US team in the World Cup next month.
Apart from Ching, the other players that were cut from the US roster included Heath Pearce, Chad Marshall (both defenders), Alejandro Bedoya, Robbie Rogers, Sacha Kljestan (all midfielders), and Eddie Johnson (forward).
The 23-man roster for the United States World Cup team is as follows:
Goalkeepers include Tim Howard from Everton, Brad Guzan from Aston Villa, and Marcus Hahnemann from Wolverhamton Wanderers.
Forwards include Herculez Gomez from Pachuca, Edson Buddle from Los Angeles Galaxy, Jozy Altidore from Hull, and Robbie Findley from Real Salt Lake.
Midfielders include Landon Donovan from Los Angeles Galaxy, Jose Torres from Pachuca, DaMarcus Beasley from Rangers, Clint Dempsey from Fulham, Benny Feilhaber from AGF Aarhus, Michael Bradley from Borussia Moenchengladbach, Stuart Holden from Bolton, Maurice Edu from Rangers, and Ricardo Clark from Eintracht Frankfurt.
Defenders include Jonathan Spector from West Ham, Oguchi Onyewu from AC Milan, Carlos Bocanegra from Rennes, Jay DeMerit from Watford, Jonathan Bornstein from Chivas USA, Clarence Goodson from IK Start and Steve Cherundolo from Hannover.
The US team will make their first head-to-head match on June 12 against England in South Africa for the 2010 World Cup.
