Portugal ended a severe scoring drought today by beating the North Korean team 7-0, which places Portugal in nice shape to get to the next round of 16 teams. “It was a great day for Portugal and Portuguese football,” said the coach, Carlos Queiroz.

The route started with Meireles’ 29th-minute goal that tied up the match, followed by Simao, Almeida and Tiago, all of whom scored rather early in the second half of play.

North Korea was playing nicely early on, and had plenty of opportunitites, but when the match was tied by Meireles, the Koreans seemed to fall apart and never really were able to pull back into the match.
