Wednesday, the Phoenix Coyotes officially announced that they have successfully re-signed their left wing Scott Upshall to a one-year deal. The actual financial terms of this one-year contract were not disclosed at the time of the announcement made by General Manager Don Maloney of the Coyotes.
The 26-year-old left wing scored a total of 18 goals with 14 assists with 50 penalty minutes for a total of 32 points this past season in the 49 appearances that he made as a Coyote. Towards the end o the season, the left wing suffered an injury to his knee on January 28 in the game against Calgary keeping him off the ice and ultimately ending his season.
Upshall did receive one recognition even though he sustained a knee injury – at the time of his injury, he was at the top of his team with his 18 scored goals. In addition, the 18 scored goals was an all-time high in Upshall’s career in a single season.
The Coyotes acquired Upshall as well as a second-round draft pick in a deal in March of 2009 where the Philadelphia Flyers acquired enforcer Daniel Carcillo. During the 2008-2009 season with the Coyotes, Upshall scored eight goals with five assists in a total of 19 appearances. Originally acquired by Nashville in the 2002 Draft as the sixth pick overall in the first round, Upshall has made 279 NHL career appearances and has scored 64 goals with 74 assists as well as 273 penalty minutes.
After the knee injury, Upshall underwent surgery on his right knee in order to repair ligament damage. According to Maloney, he is now healthy and Upshall is expected to have a wonderful upcoming season.
How do you guys think his season will start and end? Are you as optimistic about the upcoming season for Upshall as General Manager Maloney?
