Tuesday, the Washington Capitals signed forward/center/right wing and restricted free agent Boyd Gordon to a contract for one year as announced by general manager and vice president of the Capitals, George McPhee. Various media sources report that the one-year contract deal is worth $800,000
The 26-year-old known penalty killer has been with Washington for seven seasons with his seventh being the 2009-2010 season where he appeared in 36 games and recorded six assists and four goals. His playing time out on the ice was limited due to a back injury but played well and hard when he was on the ice especially when it came to face-off time.
He won 61% of his face-offs and had he had enough contests to qualify, he would have been top in the NHL. He was classed in third position for the average shorthanded time on the ice, which was 2 minutes and 39 seconds per hockey contest. During the playoffs, while shorthanded, he scored one goal and recorded one assist.
Gordon was the 17th overall pick out of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft and went to the Capitals and has been with them ever since. He now holds the longest permanent status as a Washington Capital on the roster. For the Capitals, he has made 303 appearances in career games. In those 303 games, he has recorded 76 points, which consists of 52 assists and 24 goals and a very small amount of penalty minutes equaling 66 minutes.
Gordon achieved the honor of winning the 2000-2001 Memorial Cup. In the AHL, he played in 21 total playoff games and was a huge contributor and member of the Hersey Bears who were the champions of the 2006 Calder Cup.
