Veteran forward Tomas Holmstrom and the Detroit Red Wings will be together for two more years as the Wings agreed to a two-year deal with the forward today. As per NHL Fanhouse, the two-year contract deal will pay him nearly $1.9 million per season, which is a deal he is expected to sign sometime today or Monday.
In 1994, Holmstrom was drafted by the Wings in the 10th round of the NHL draft and was about to become a free agent. Since his drafting in 1994, he has remained with the Detroit Red Wings for all 13 seasons of his NHL career and will now come back next year for his 14th season with the Detroit.
The Sweden native has appeared and participated in 164 playoff games where he has recorded a total of 88 points from 46 assists and 42 goals. He also assisted Detroit in making it to the Stanley Cup and leaving as winners in 1998, 2002, and the last one being in 2008 apart from his rookie time in 1997.
In the 37-year-old’s forward 2009-2010 NHL season, which was his 13th season with the Red Wings, he has posted 20 assists and 25 goals with 45 points in a sum of 68 games. Overall, in his 13 seasons with the Wings, in 879 season games, he has recorded 214 goals among 255 assists for a total of 469 points.
Holmstrom is truly one of the best forwards in the NHL and although he has been suffering from some injuries the past few seasons, he is still just as productive, if not more productive, than he ever has been when he is actually out on the ice playing with his team.
This contract will allow for Holmstrom to retire with the Detroit Red Wings – the team that he has been with since his first draft into the NHL.
