The defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers made perhaps their last move of the NBA offseason this summer as they have agreed to terms with their backup shooting guard Shannon Brown with a two-year deal worth about $4.5 million dollars.
Heading into the offseason, Shannon Brown wanted to test the free agent waters and no one could blame him as he had finally made a name for himself in the two years with the Los Angeles Lakers. Even though the majority of the league was looking to upgrade their rosters with big-name free agents like LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Amare Stoudemire, a lot of teams were also looking for role players like Brown to fill out their roster.
Unfortunately, despite being on the most athletic in the league and on the Lakers roster, Brown really didn’t get much interest around the league as only the Cleveland Cavaliers and the New York Knicks pursued the two-time NBA champion.
Obviously, the Los Angeles Lakers really wanted re-sign Brown, but they didn’t seem interested in topping big offers from the Cavs or the Knicks. Fortunately, they didn’t have to as winning championships has become more important to Brown than having a bigger role on another team.
Reportedly, the Knicks seemed to be offering more money, but Brown was more interested in winning a third NBA title with the Lakers.
So now that Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak has succeeded in doing the two things he set out to do this offseason, re-signing Derek Fisher and Shannon Brown, and bringing in some key role players in Steve Blake, Theo Ratliff and matt Barnes, the consensus is that the Lakers are most likely done wheeling and dealing this summer.
The only thing that might happen before next season is the Lakers trading away Sasha Vujacic to free up some money, but in the meantime, they seem to be content with their current roster.
