Over the past month or so, the NBA has been buzzing about who the two-time scoring champion Tracy McGrady would be playing with next season as workouts with both the Los Angeles Clippers and Chicago Bulls didn’t go as well as anticipated and the defending NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers seemed to no longer be interested after re-signing Shannon Brown.
Even though McGrady’s prospects haven’t looked good recently as teams seemed unimpressed with the seven-time All-Star’s workouts and the his injury prone past with the Houston Rockets, the Detroit Pistons came out of nowhere and decided to take a gamble on the superstar guard by signing him to a one-year deal worth about $1.38 million dollars.
This is serious pay cut for one of the best scorers in the league, but he knew this was going to happen, going into the summer as a free agent. Despite not making the big money he used in years past and not exactly playing a title contender in Detroit, playing for the Pistons might be a good motivator for McGrady as he will have to work from the bottom up once again like he did to start his career with the Toronto Raptors.
The Detroit Pistons are a team on the verge of some serious rebuilding as they have gone from one of the best teams in the league and arguably the best team in the Eastern Conference to arguably one of the worst teams in the NBA.
Once they traded point guard Chauncey Billups to the Denver Nuggets a couple of years ago, the Detroit Pistons have headed into a downward spiral, but with Tracy McGrady playing alongside Rodney Stuckey, Richard Hamilton, Tayshawn Prince, Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon, they might be able to turn things around next season.
