Carmelo Anthony still hasn’t signed a contract extension with the Denver Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets have been one of the best young teams in the league over the last two seasons, but last year they hit a little bit of a bump in the road as the team really struggled with head coach George Karl missing time late in the season due to his second battle with cancer.

Despite battling with cancer for the second time in his life and beating the disease once again, Karl has said that he will return to the Nuggets bench next season and hopes to lead the team back to the playoffs and a shot at an NBA title.

The one key piece to the puzzle in Denver that makes the Nuggets amongst the best teams in the league is having the team’s leading scorer Carmelo Anthony leading the way, but he may not be in the Mile High city much longer as he has still yet to sign the proposed three-year contract extension offered to him this summer.

If Melo doesn’t sign the proposed three-year $65 million dollar contract offered to him at some point next season, the three-time All-Star will have the option to officially become a free agent and become arguably the most desirable free agent next summer.

As of right now, the consensus seems to be that Melo probably won’t sign the contract extension and become a free agent with his most likely destination being with the New York Knicks.

One of the rumors flying around the league has been that Chris Paul has put the idea of creating their own big three in the Big Apple with Amare Stoudemire in Carmelo Anthony’s head.

It is no secret that Melo still has a soft spot for the Big Apple as he played his college ball with Syracuse and recently married longtime girlfriend LaLa Vasquez in New York with players like LeBron James and Chris Paul attending.

Personally, I believe it is a bit of a stretch that Melo would be headed to New York after next season, but if the Denver Nuggets struggle next season or fail to become a title contender, he may be on his way out. This should be an interesting NBA online sportsbook season.
