Season Ending Surgery a Possibility for Boston Red Sox Dustin Pedroia

The Boston Red Sox have had a pretty good season so far and are currently third in the standings for the American League East. However, injuries are not becoming for a team that has done well thus far this year and may actually have a chance at the number one position in the 2010 AL East Standings. You’d think as many key players that have already suffered major injuries this year, some keeping them out the rest of the season, that there couldn’t possibly be any more…

However, Dustin Pedroia, second baseman for the Boston Red Sox, is likely to miss the rest of the 2010 MLB season. The 27-year-old injured his left foot in San Francisco on June 25 and specifically fractured the navicular bone. He went on to miss 44 games. He came back for two games starting August 17, but then his foot began troubling him some more and he was scratched on August 19 approximately 90 minutes prior to the commencement of the match-up against the Angels. He was placed on the DL the following day and now it’s likely he’ll be there the rest of this season.

For now, Pedroia is wearing a boot on his left foot to help stabilize the area and will continue to do so for about a week, at which time he will then be examined and it will be determined whether or not he’ll require surgery or if he’ll continue this non-operative course that he is currently on. If surgery is the decision, Pedroia will have a screw inserted, which will ultimately help endorse the healing process; however, if surgery is not the decision, no one knows when he’ll return back to the line-up whether it will be next season or not as there is no specific timetable on how long it will take for his foot to heal properly.
