After missing a total of 29 games due to a leg injury, All-Star three-time shortstop Jimmy Rollins is now back in the starting lineup for the Philadelphia Phillies. He received approval from his doctor to get back into the game and will appear in the starting lineup for Monday night’s game. The Phillies will be playing against the Pittsburgh Pirates tonight at Citizens Bank Park.
April 13 is the date that short stop Rollins found himself hitting the disabled list. He strained the calf muscle of his left leg on the 12th of April while he was practicing in the outfield with warm-up sprints for the Phillies’ home opening game.
Rollins has had plenty of time to recover from the injury and not only does he think he is ready to get back on the field, but the team and coaches do as well. He has played in only a single rehabilitation game with Class A Clearwater.
For the team to have room for Rollins return, Wilson Valdez was elected for assignment. The Phillies will thus have 10 days to decide to release, trade, or place Valdez on waivers.
Although Rollins will be in the starting lineup for tonight’s game against the Pirates, Rollins will be third in the batting lineup. He is normally the lead batter, but is replacing second baseman Casey Utley in the third position of the starting lineup tonight due to Utley suffering from flulike symptoms.
Hopefully, after tonight’s game, Rollins will be back to his regular spot in the lineup. Prior to Rollins injury, he was hitting at .391 and although the Phillies have done well without him (as they are 18-12 right now), it will definitely be a good thing that Rollins is back if he can go back to his same playing style.
