Jacoby Ellsbury underwent new tests and examinations and the results weren’t pretty. Apparently, the MRI shows that Ellsbury has a new injury to his ribs – new fractures. The outfielder for the Boston Red Sox first sustained four broken ribs on April 11 when colliding with teammate Adrian Beltre in the game against the Royals.
Wednesday, Ellsbury was examined in Los Angeles by orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum, whom Ellsbury went to see based off his agent’s recommendations for a second opinion. The Red Sox approved the visit and MRI test results showed that he had a new set of rib fractures in a different area than the first set of fractures. He’ll be required to receive physical therapy and lots of rest over the next few weeks as stated by Dr. Tom Gill, the Red Sox Medical Director, and Dr. Yocum.
Ellsbury was first placed on the disabled list on April 20 and was then activated on May 22. He then tried playing, but incurred some pain after diving to catch a fly ball. He went on to play in the next three games before being placed back on disabled list May 28. The fly ball is more than likely what caused the new set of rib fractures.
Currently, there is no positive and/or clear timetable for the return of the outfielder. Ellsbury will work out and train in Phoenix at the Athletes Performance Training Center for the next couple of weeks.
Many think that Ellsbury should be released from the Red Sox. What do you think? My personal opinion is that Ellsbury is a fantastic player with a batting average of .250, two stolen bases, and three RBI’s during his appearances this year. Last year, he ultimately led the majors with a total of 70 stolen bases. I think it would be a total blow to Boston if they release Ellsbury as he is a great player.
Boston has kept Ellsbury on the disabled list for quite some time now, don’t you think that if they were even considering the option of cutting him from the team that they probably would have done it already?
