Both the Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies will be attempting to capture a win today at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies will be trying to capture their fourth consecutive NL East title and if they succeed in winning, it will be their 10th straight win and the Braves’ third consecutive loss.
Oddsmakers, including one of the most trusted online sportsbooks, Bodog Sportsbook, have the Phillies has -153 favorites on the moneyline.
The Phillies have Roy Oswalt starting on the mound tonight for his fifth straight start in attempt to sweep the Atlanta Braves in this three-game series. Oswalt is 13-13 with an earned run average of 2.90 for the season and 7-0 with an earned run average of 1.55 in his previous nine starts with Philadelphia winning every time.
Oswalt is one of the three best pitchers for Philadelphia. The other two pitched the first two games of this series, which is just what manager Charlie Manuel had planned. Cole Hamels pitched in the opener allowing a single run in eight innings resulting in a 3-1 victory Monday then on Tuesday, Roy Halladay became the first player to win 20 games for Philadelphia in the past 28 years, resulting in a 5-3 victory. With Tuesday’s win, the Phillies increased their lead in the NL East to five games and ultimately reduced the number needed to clinch the division title this year to six, which would be the fourth consecutive title.
The Braves will have Tommy Hanson on the mound who is 10-11 with an earned run average of 3.62 for the season. He pitched last on Friday against the New York Mets resulting in a victory of 6-4 after allowing four runs in addition to five hits over six innings; however, he did end up retiring 13 of the final 14 batters he faced. This win was his second in his previous 14 starts. Against the Phillies, Hanson is 1-0 with an earned run average of 2.38 and will face them for the first time since May.
While Atlanta has dropped a significant 13 games in the National League East standings, they are still atop the standings foe the Wild Card but only by a single game over the San Diego Padres.
