Activated from the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday for the San Diego Padres was outfielder Scott Hairston. Hairston was first placed on the 15-day DL on May 16 due to a left hamstring strain. This activation comes just prior to the commencement of the final game of the series against the New York Mets.
The outfielder’s injury initially came the day before being placed on the DL when he was attempting to catch a line drive in the games against Dodgers, which the Padres loss. Before his placement on the disabled list, Hairston had participated in a total of 32 games, was hitting .247, and had posted two home runs as well as 14 RBI’s.
Hairston started with Class A Lake Elsinore in three games this week and he was 4 for 7 and has posted one RBI and four walks in his rehab appearances. He played in leftfield for two of those starts and was the designated hitter for the third start. During his time in the Minor League, he didn’t feel any distress in his hamstring.
In order for room to be made on the active roster for Hairston’s activation, outfielder Luis Durango was optioned to AAA Portland. He was first called up from AAA Portland a little over a week on May 25 to take Hairston’s spot after his injury. In his six appearances with the Padres since being called upon, he has had two RBI’s and hit a .385. The two RBI’s occurring this past Monday and being the very first two of his career in the Major Leagues.
Hairston was able to join his older brother on the team Thursday night against the Mets. Jerry Hairston Jr., his older brother, started the game as shortstop with Hairston starting in centerfield.
