Friday, the Chicago Cubs activated third baseman Aramis Ramirez from the 15-day disabled list. June 8, Ramirez was off the field due to an injured left thumb – specifically a contusion – and went on the disabled list the following day. He made a couple rehab appearances at AAA Peoria Chiefs, had a single run batted in as well as two walks, and was 1-for-6 in 8 appearances at the plate.
This season has been a struggle for 32-year-old Ramirez. He has participated in 47 games has is batting a .168 going into Friday’s game. He has 5 home runs and 22 RBIs. Ramirez will play with the Cubs Friday against the White Sox.
Last season was better for Ramirez even though he did miss a couple of months due to an injury to his shoulder. He was batting a .317 last season and finished the season of 82 games with 65 RBIs. He was also batting .425 with RISP. This year alone, Chicago is currently batting .250 as a team with runners in scoring position. In terms of runs scored, the Cubs are currently in 13th rank in the NL.
To create room on the Cubs’ roster for Ramirez’s return, Chicago has to designate infielder Chad Tracy for assignment. 30-year-old Tracy has appeared in 28 games with the Chicago Cubs and has batted a .250 with 5 runs batted in and two doubles. He was originally recalled earlier this month from AAA Iowa when Ramirez went on the 15-day DL. Since his recall, he has been 5-for-22 batting .227.
Since Tracy has been designated for assignment, Chicago will now have ten days to decide whether to release the infielder, trade him or decide to place him on waivers. What do you think the Cubs will decide to do with Chad Tracy?
