The expectations were somewhat high coming into this NFL season that the Oakland Raiders would finally get back into the playoffs and become the team everyone has predicted they would be. With an upgrade at quarterback in Carson Palmer and a new head coach in Hue Jackson, the Raiders were thought to be a force to be reckoned with, but they continued to be a streaky football team and as a result missed the playoffs yet again.
Fortunately, there is hope for the immediate future for the Raiders as they will have this team relatively intact heading into next season, but they will do it without Hue Jackson. Despite going 8-8, Jackson wasn’t able to salvage his job for one more season in the Bay Area as the four losses in five games to end the season left a bad taste in new GM Reggie McKenzie’s mouth.
Whether or not this move makes this team that much better remains to be seen, but McKenzie wanted to make an impression right out of the gate and that he has with the firing of Hue Jackson. It would be hard to argue that Jackson didn’t have an extremely difficult job as he had brought in a rusty quarterback to replace starter Jason Campbell (collarbone) and deal with what turned into a season-ending injury for Pro Bowl caliber running back Darren McFadden (ankle).
Personally, I believe Jackson earned the right for at least one more season, but Reggie McKenzie might have the inside track in bringing in a new head coach that could be a drastic upgrade like Jeff Fisher, Bill Cowher or Marty Schottenheimer.
There is no telling what the Oakland Raiders will do in terms of searching for a new head coach, but hiring any of the three head coaches mentioned above would be a step in the right direction.
