Simply put, Antonio Bryant was a shortcoming for the Cincinnati Bengals. They signed him in March as a free agent, despite his recent struggles with injuries and surgeries thinking that he had recovered enough to play well and be a huge contender for the team. However, shortly after signing him in March to a four-year contract worth $28 million, they realized they had probably made a move in the wrong direction.
The 29-year-old wide receiver suffered a knee injury, which is the same ailment he had in 2009 and surgery was performed in order to try to repair cartilage damage, which is also what has kept him from performing in any of the 2010 NFL pre-season games with the Bengals – which ultimately led to his dismissal from the team. The Bengals had a few choices with what to do with Bryant. They could have waited for him to fully recovery, place him on the injured reserve list (which would end his 2010 NFL season) or release him and the Bengals chose the latter as they figured this was the best decision at the time.
If Bryant is able to get his knee well, he is likely to be a huge prospect on the free agent market but until then, we will just have to wait and see. If he can recover prior the start of the regular season, there are a few teams that will likely sign him – but he will need to have his functioning at 110% before that is a consideration.
While Bryant wasn’t able to meet team standards, Terrell Owens, who the Bengals signed late in July due to realization of the fact that Bryant wasn’t healthy enough to perform, most certainly was. In addition, rookie Jordan Shipley has seen more playing time and has been rather good. In Saturday’s 35-20 loss to Buffalo, Shipley had five catches for a total of 38 yards.
