The NFL’s policy for using performance-enhancing drugs seems to be being violated quite a bit this year. Already, another football player is being suspended from games this season due to violating the policy.
Gerald McRath, linebacker for the Tennessee Titans, has been handed a four game suspension by the NFL confirmed by Titans Coach Jeff Fisher on Monday following the team’s minicamp session. Since the guidelines still allow McRath to attend preseason games and training camp, he will be allowed to participate in these activities with the team.
Currently, there has been no specific word on the substance that the Tennessee’s linebacker was caught in violation of but based on standard punishment and the NFL’s policy, it seems that it is anabolic steroid or similar substances.
The four suspended games will consist of the first four games of the regular NFL season and will be unable to attend any team activities and practices throughout these four weeks. The suspension will begin on September 4 and will be eligible to return on October 4. The four games of the season that the linebacker will miss include three homes games against Oakland, Denver, and Pittsburgh as well as including one away game against the Giants.
The next game is an away game against Dallas, which will be the first eligible game for 23-year-old McRath to participate in during the regular NFL season.
The Titans’ linebacker has been practicing this offseason with the first defense team. He is in his second-year in the NFL and was drafted out of Southern Mississippi in the fourth round of the draft. Last year as a rookie, he played 16 games, 5 of which were starts, where he recorded 47 tackles and a single interception.
Despite the four game suspension that McRath has received, he is still an eligible candidate for the outside linebacker position on the active starting roster for this upcoming season.
