Browns’ Draft Pick Colt McCoy Shouldn’t Expect to Start This Year

Colt McCoy from Texas was chosen with 85th draft pick overall in the 2010 NFL Draft this past Friday. He was not expected to drop that low and it was expected by many that he would go at least in the second round. Quarterback Colt McCoy was chosen overall 85th by the Cleveland Browns.

Rookie quarterback McCoy will probably be one of the leaders when it comes to spring training camp but that is going to be beside the point. He is a rookie and the president of the Browns, Mike Holmgren, plans to keep McCoy on the sidelines and teach him the proper way to play ball. The Browns did not choose McCoy as their fourth round pick for him to play this season rather they chose him because he is a good choice for the long run.

Right now, the Browns plan to use veteran quarterback Jake Delhomme for the starter this season with Seneca Wallace as the backup. This is how it would be if it were up to Holmgren, but the coaches have the final say.

As for the coaches, they seem to agree with Holmgren to not start McCoy this year. They plan to develop and improve McCoy as their quarterback for the future rather than now. They drafted McCoy as he is the best choice for the Browns for the long run – Delhomme and Wallace are not. Things can always change, but for now, he will be sitting out this season.

McCoy is a great quarterback and whether he starts this season or not, he is going to give the other quarterbacks a run for their money and he will show the Browns’ coaches that he has what it takes to be their franchise quarterback whenever they decide they are fully ready to allow him to be.
