Patrick Willis, All Pro linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers, has signed a five-year extension that is worth $50 million. Willis still had two years left in his current rookie contract; however, the 49ers didn’t want to wait to extend the contract. As of Tuesday, the 49ers now have 25-year-old Willis held captive up to 2016 and Willis is guaranteed $29 million in the five-year deal.
Willis is apparently impressing Coach Mike Singletary a good bit or the deal wouldn’t have been made – especially this early. Coach Singletary is a linebacker in the Hall of Fame and I’m assuming that putting so much effort into getting Willis to stay with the 49ers that he believes Willis can enter the Hall of Fame as well. Singletary honestly believes that Willis could turn into a team legend and plans to do everything in his power to take as good of care of him as possible.
Patrick Willis was the 11th pick in the 2007 NFL Draft and has been growing ever since with the San Francisco 49ers. Willis has made a total of 48 starts and has made a huge impact by leading the team in tackles.
With this new huge money extension deal, Willis now the top paid inside linebacker in the history of the NFL. He was originally set to make $900,000 this season, but that amount has now been bumped up to a remarkable $11 million.
Also with this huge money deal, Willis has the opportunity to make it into the Hall of Fame and join Head Coach Singletary and the San Francisco 49ers do not have to agonize about Willis walking into the free agent pool in the near future. The 49ers have the faith in Willis to become a team legend – do you think Willis will be able to pull of the expectations of his coaches and others? Do you think he is worth $50 million? What are your thoughts?
